I often work on several paintings at once as I enjoy being able to move between them, trying things out, adding, subtracting, scratching out, letting dry, building layers. I get a large sheet of heavy paper and mask it out into different sized squares.
It’s always exciting when I decide to peel off the masking tape between them and see the finished pieces. Sometimes they work as a set, sometimes I end up with 3 completely different paintings. Often these are starting points for larger works.
